UK Government Updates Portugal Travel Advice: What British Holidaymakers Need to Know

Foreign Office guidance flags medication rules, wildfire risks and new border checks as Britons prepare for summer trips to Portugal.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has updated its travel advice for Portugal, with new guidance published on 17 July 2026 covering mainland Portugal, Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azores. Portugal remains open to British visitors and the FCDO is not advising against travel, but holidaymakers are urged to note several important changes before departure.​​​​​​​

One of the most notable updates confirms that prescriptions issued in the UK are not accepted by pharmacies in Portugal. Travellers who take regular medication should bring enough for their entire stay, keeping it in its original container with the prescription label clearly visible, particularly given Portugal's strict rules around certain medicines, including antibiotics.

Anyone who runs out of medication abroad may need to visit a local health centre or hospital A&E department for a new prescription and could be required to pay for it. Hotter weather, later nights and disrupted routines can also affect how some medications work, so anyone with health concerns is advised to speak to their GP or pharmacist before travelling.​​​​​​​

The updated advice flags an increased wildfire risk across Portugal between April and October, with hot, dry and windy conditions capable of causing fires to spread rapidly, including in popular tourist areas. The FCDO describes wildfires as dangerous and unpredictable, warning that authorities may order evacuations or close roads at short notice.

Travellers staying in rural areas, the Algarve or Madeira are encouraged to familiarise themselves with their accommodation's emergency procedures, monitor local fire updates, and call 112 if they spot a fire. Causing a wildfire, even accidentally, can carry a fine or prison sentence.​​​​​​​

With temperatures expected to rise significantly over the coming months, visitors are advised to check local weather forecasts, stay hydrated and follow safety guidance issued by Portuguese authorities. Travellers should also check with their airline, accommodation provider or tour operator if extreme heat or nearby wildfires could affect their journey.​​​​​​​

Holidaymakers do not need to change existing bookings because of this update, but should check the latest guidance shortly before travelling, carry adequate medication, confirm their passport meets entry requirements, and take out comprehensive travel insurance covering medical care and disruption. A valid Global Health Insurance Card or European Health Insurance Card can provide access to medically necessary state healthcare but does not replace full travel insurance.​​​​​​​
