Etihad Airways Expands Mainland China Network with Five New Direct Routes from Abu Dhabi
Etihad Airways has announced a significant expansion of its mainland China network, adding five new direct routes from Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport. The move represents one of the airline's largest single-market capacity increases in recent years, growing its weekly China flights from 7 to 35 across six destinations in total.
The five new routes will connect Abu Dhabi with Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou Baiyun, Chengdu Tianfu, Hangzhou Xiaoshan, and Shenzhen Bao'an — alongside the airline's existing daily service to Beijing Daxing International Airport, which currently stands as its only Chinese gateway.
The expansion rolls out in two phases. Daily flights to Shanghai Pudong will be the first to launch, commencing on 1 October 2026. A broader wave of new services then follows in early March 2027, with Guangzhou and Hangzhou launching on 4 March, Chengdu on 5 March, and Shenzhen on 7 March.
Shanghai and Guangzhou will each be served seven times weekly. Hangzhou and Shenzhen will operate five flights a week, while Chengdu will receive four weekly departures. All routes will be flown on Etihad's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, featuring 28 Business Class and 262 Economy Class seats throughout.
Each city has been selected for clear strategic reasons. Shanghai is China's leading global financial centre and a major international cargo hub. Guangzhou is the primary gateway for trade and manufacturing in southern China. Chengdu is a rapidly growing innovation and technology hub in western China. Hangzhou is widely recognised as the heart of China's digital economy and e-commerce industry. Shenzhen is a globally significant technology powerhouse and one of China's most important export markets. Together, they give Etihad a well-rounded presence across China's most commercially active regions.
All five new routes will operate as part of Etihad's existing joint venture with China Eastern Airlines. This partnership enables coordinated flight schedules and smoother onward connections within China, with China Eastern already flying to the UAE from Shanghai, Kunming, and Xi'an. Passengers arriving in China on Etihad will therefore have convenient access to a wider range of domestic destinations beyond the six cities directly served from Abu Dhabi.
Etihad's cargo operations will also benefit from the expansion, supported by a separate freight joint venture with SF Airlines, one of China's largest cargo carriers. This is expected to strengthen air freight links between China's key manufacturing hubs and global markets through Abu Dhabi.
For UK travellers, this is a welcome development. Etihad operates regular services from London Heathrow and Manchester to Abu Dhabi, and these new onward connections make it easier to reach some of China's most important cities for both business and leisure.
Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves described the expansion as "a clear signal of our long-term commitment to the market," adding that the new routes will "support growing demand for travel and trade, while creating new opportunities for cargo, business and tourism."
With inaugural services expected to attract strong demand — particularly the daily Shanghai flights launching this October — early booking is strongly recommended.
