Edinburgh Airport Passengers Issued Spain Travel Warning Over EES Border Delays

Holidaymakers flying from Edinburgh to Spain are being told to prepare for waits of up to six hours at passport control, as the EU's new Entry Exit System takes effect alongside tougher financial entry rules.​​​​​​​

Passengers travelling from Edinburgh Airport to Spain this summer are being warned to brace for lengthy delays at border control, with some queues expected to stretch to as long as six hours. The disruption is linked to the rollout of the European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES), which is changing the way UK travellers are processed when entering the Schengen Area.

The EES replaces the traditional manual stamping of passports with a digital registration process. Under the new system, non-EU travellers, including those from the UK, are required to have their fingerprints and a photograph taken at the border. While designed to modernise and tighten border security, the additional steps are expected to significantly slow down processing times, particularly at busier airports.

Industry figures have warned that popular Spanish destinations, including Alicante, Mallorca and Lanzarote, could see some of the worst congestion as the system beds in. With six-hour waits being flagged as a real possibility during peak periods, there are growing concerns that some passengers could miss connecting flights, pre-booked transfers or excursions as a result.​​​​​​​

Alongside the border changes, UK travellers are being reminded of the financial proof now required to enter Spain. Following a change to Spain's minimum wage, visitors must be able to demonstrate they hold at least €122.10 per person, per day, for the length of their stay, with a minimum total of €1,089.90. This is a Schengen Area requirement, and border officials are entitled to ask for evidence such as bank statements, along with proof of accommodation and onward or return travel. Travellers who cannot provide this documentation risk being refused entry.
