Middle East Flight Disruption: Over 1,300 Delays and Cancellations Hit Regional Air Travel

Thousands of passengers face longer waits and missed connections as airspace restrictions and security concerns add pressure to Gulf and Middle East flight networks.

Flight-tracking data for Thursday, 23 July, recorded 1,132 delays and 182 cancellations across Middle Eastern aviation networks. The disruption affected passengers travelling within the region as well as those using major Gulf airports for connecting journeys between the UK, Asia, Africa and Australia.

Although many flights continued to operate as scheduled, delayed departures created longer airport waits, missed connections and last-minute changes to onward travel plans. Passengers on multi-sector itineraries faced particular difficulties, as a delay on the first flight could affect every remaining part of their journey.​​​​​​​

The disruption comes as airlines continue to manage security concerns and airspace restrictions linked to renewed regional tensions.

On 22 July, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency advised airlines against operating in Jordanian airspace, and extended warnings covering Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf of Oman until 31 August 2026. Separate advisories affecting Iran, Iraq and Lebanon have also been extended until the end of August, citing risks from increased military activity, missile launches and air-defence systems operating close to civilian flight paths.

Airlines rerouting around affected areas may face longer journey times and greater pressure on aircraft and crew schedules, which can cause knock-on delays to later services. However, the exact cause behind every individual delay or cancellation has not been independently confirmed, and factors such as airport congestion, technical checks, weather and crew availability may also have contributed.​​​​​​​

The disruption is particularly relevant for UK travellers connecting through hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi, widely used for journeys from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and other UK airports to destinations across South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and Australia.

Passengers are urged to check both sections of a connecting itinerary before leaving for the airport, as a UK departure may operate normally even if the onward Middle East service is delayed, rerouted or cancelled. Travellers should also confirm their airline has up-to-date contact details, keep essential medicines and documents in cabin baggage, and retain receipts for any expenses incurred due to disruption.​​​​​​​

Anyone whose flight is cancelled should contact their airline or travel provider to discuss alternative flights, refunds and further support. Those departing from a UK airport, or flying with a UK or EU carrier, may also be entitled to assistance or compensation under UK261 regulations, depending on the circumstances.
