British Airways Orders Pratt & Whitney GTF Engines For New Airbus A320neo Fleet

British Airways has confirmed a major new engine agreement with Pratt & Whitney, selecting the manufacturer's GTF (Geared Turbofan) engines to power up to 63 new Airbus A320neo aircraft as part of its short-haul fleet renewal programme.

The agreement, announced during the Farnborough International Airshow on 20 July 2026, covers 33 confirmed Airbus A320neo aircraft, with options for a further 30. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027. Pratt & Whitney will also provide long-term support through a 12-year EngineWise Comprehensive maintenance agreement, covering engine performance and upkeep as the aircraft enter service.

British Airways currently flies a number of older Airbus A320-family aircraft powered by IAE V2500 engines, so the new order marks a significant technological shift as the airline modernises its short-haul operations.

What Are Pratt & Whitney GTF Engines

Pratt & Whitney's GTF engines use a gearbox that allows different components to run at more efficient speeds, reducing fuel burn, emissions and noise compared with older engine designs. The manufacturer says its GTF engines can deliver around 20% lower fuel consumption and a noise footprint roughly 75% smaller than previous-generation technology. Airbus states separately that the A320neo can cut fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions per seat by at least 20% compared with earlier A320 variants.

Rick Deurloo, president of commercial engines at Pratt & Whitney, described British Airways' decision as a strong vote of confidence in the GTF programme, noting that the engines would support the airline's fleet expansion while improving efficiency and the wider passenger experience.

Specific routes and cabin configurations for the new aircraft have not yet been announced.

British Airways becomes the latest airline to back Pratt & Whitney's GTF programme for the A320neo family. Wizz Air became the first operator in the world to fly an Airbus A321XLR powered by GTF engines when it took delivery of the aircraft in May 2025, part of a wider order for 47 A321XLR jets built for longer-range routes.

Vietnamese carrier Vietjet also expanded its GTF commitment in February 2026, ordering 44 more Airbus aircraft — 24 A321neo and 20 A321XLR — taking its total GTF-powered order book to 137 aircraft. Pratt & Whitney says more than 2,800 GTF-powered aircraft are now in service with over 90 airlines worldwide, with a backlog exceeding 8,000 engines.
