Kamembe Airport (KME) sits in the far southwest of Rwanda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Getting there from the UK means flying to Kigali first, then catching a short domestic hop on RwandAir.
RwandAir operates the Kigali-Kamembe route using Dash 8 turboprop aircraft. Flight time is around 30 minutes. The international leg to Kigali can be done via Brussels (RwandAir), Nairobi (Kenya Airways), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian), or Dubai (Emirates).
Total return fares including the domestic connection run £550-1,300 depending on season. Gorilla trekking season (June-September) and December-February holidays see higher demand. The domestic add-on is fairly cheap at about £40-70 each way.
Kamembe serves as the gateway to Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa's oldest rainforests. The nearby town of Rusizi sits on the shores of Lake Kivu, with the DRC border town of Bukavu visible across the water.
