Massawa (also spelled Mitsiwa) is Eritrea's main port city, sitting on the Red Sea coast about 120 km east of the capital Asmara. Regular commercial flights are essentially non-existent. The practical route from the UK is to fly to Asmara and then drive the spectacular 2-3 hour road through the mountains to sea level.
Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and EgyptAir via Cairo offer the main connections to Asmara from London, taking around 8-12 hours with one stop. From Asmara, the road to Massawa is one of the most scenic drives in East Africa, descending through dramatic mountain switchbacks from 2,300 metres to the coast.
International return fares to Asmara range from £500-750 in low season to £950-1,400+ over Christmas. A driver and car from Asmara to Massawa costs around £50-100 one way. Shared transport is cheaper.
Massawa has a rich history as a trading port going back centuries. The old town features Ottoman and Egyptian architecture, along with Italian colonial buildings. Much of the city was damaged during the Eritrean War of Independence. The Dahlak Archipelago, accessible by boat from Massawa, offers some of the Red Sea's best diving.
Price Patterns
November-March is the most comfortable period for Massawa, with temperatures around 25-33°C. Summer months are extremely hot. International fares peak in December.
Sweet Spot
November-March for tolerable heat. Book flights 6-8 weeks ahead.
Avoid Booking
May-September when temperatures soar above 40°C. This isn't just uncomfortable, it can be dangerous.
