Maroua is the capital of Cameroon's Far North Region, sitting in the dry Sahel zone close to the Nigerian and Chadian borders. There are no international flights. Getting here from the UK means flying to Douala or Yaounde and then connecting on a domestic Camair-Co flight, adding around 1.5 hours to the journey.
The international leg from London takes 10-14 hours via Brussels, Paris, or Istanbul. From Douala or Yaounde, Camair-Co operates a limited schedule to Maroua Salak Airport (MVR). An alternative is to fly to Garoua and then drive the 3 hours north to Maroua.
Total return fares come to £550-750 in low season, rising to £900-1,200+ around December. This includes both the international and domestic legs. Budget extra for ground transport if going via Garoua.
Maroua is known for its leather goods, vibrant markets, and proximity to the Mandara Mountains. The Rhumsiki area, about 80 km south, is famous for its dramatic volcanic rock formations. Be aware that the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of the Far North Region due to security concerns.

International fares follow standard Cameroon patterns. The cooler dry season (November-February) is the most comfortable time to visit, though it coincides with higher airfares.

6-8 weeks ahead for international flights. October-November for the best balance of weather and price.
Avoid Booking
Peak rainy season (July-September). December holidays for highest fares. Check security situation before any travel to the Far North.
