Mahajanga (Majunga) is Madagascar's second port city on the northwest coast. Known for its baobab-lined avenue, warm climate, and as a gateway to Ankarafantsika National Park. Population: around 250,000.
From the UK, most routes go through Antananarivo (TNR), Madagascar's capital. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is the most popular carrier. Kenya Airways via Nairobi and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul also serve Antananarivo. From there, Madagascar Airlines (Tsaradia) connects to Mahajanga.
Return fares to Antananarivo start from around £550 in low season. Domestic connections within Madagascar add £100-250 each way. Mahajanga flights can be infrequent, so book domestic legs well in advance.
Madagascar requires a visa on arrival (around £25-35 depending on duration). The country uses the Malagasy Ariary (MGA). Credit cards are only accepted at larger hotels.

Baobab Avenue
A road lined with ancient baobab trees on the outskirts of the city. Particularly striking at sunset.
Ankarafantsika National Park
About 115 km south. Dry deciduous forest with lemurs, chameleons, and over 100 bird species.
Mahajanga Beach
A waterfront beach in the city with a lively promenade. Popular for evening walks and seafood stalls.
Katsepy Lighthouse
Across the bay from Mahajanga, reached by ferry. A colonial-era lighthouse with panoramic views.
Cirque Rouge
Red and ochre-coloured sandstone formations about 12 km north. A striking natural amphitheatre.
