Gao is a historic city on the Niger River in northeastern Mali, once the capital of the Songhai Empire. It sits at the edge of the Sahara about 1,200 km from Bamako. Population: around 90,000.
From the UK, all routes to Gao go through Bamako (BKO), Mali's capital. There are no direct UK-Bamako flights. Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca, Air France via Paris, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, and Brussels Airlines via Brussels are the main options. Total travel time to Bamako is 8-16 hours.
Return fares to Bamako range from around £600-1,200 depending on season. From Bamako, domestic flights to Gao (when operating) add £150-300. The overland option is long: 12-15 hours by road to Mopti, 18+ hours to Gao.
Check FCDO travel advice before booking. Security in northern and central Mali has been a concern. A visa is required for UK nationals, obtainable from the Malian Embassy in London.
