Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) sits on a vast natural harbour at Madagascar's northern tip. It's a former French colonial town and gateway to Amber Mountain and the Tsingy Rouge. Population: around 115,000.
From the UK, most routes go through Antananarivo (TNR), Madagascar's capital. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is the most popular carrier. Kenya Airways via Nairobi and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul also serve Antananarivo. From there, Madagascar Airlines (Tsaradia) connects to Diego Suarez.
Return fares to Antananarivo start from around £550 in low season. Domestic connections within Madagascar add £100-250 each way. Diego Suarez flights can be infrequent, so book domestic legs well in advance.
Madagascar requires a visa on arrival (around £25-35 depending on duration). The country uses the Malagasy Ariary (MGA). Credit cards are only accepted at larger hotels.
