Blantyre is Malawi's commercial capital and largest city, in the Shire Highlands of the south. Named after David Livingstone's birthplace in Scotland, it's the country's business hub. Population: around 800,000.
There are no direct flights from the UK to Malawi. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is the most popular routing, with total travel time around 14-20 hours. Kenya Airways via Nairobi and South African Airways via Johannesburg are alternatives. Some travellers also fly via Dubai with Emirates.
Return fares range from £550-750 in low season to £950-1,200+ during peak periods. April and November tend to offer the best deals. July-August is the most expensive due to dry season demand.
Chileka International Airport (BLZ) is about 16 km from Blantyre city centre. Ethiopian Airlines and Airlink operate into Blantyre. Lilongwe (LLW) is the alternative international airport, about 300 km north.
