Bertoua is the capital of Cameroon's East Region, deep in the interior about 350 km east of Yaounde. There are no international flights and very limited domestic air service. The practical route from the UK is to fly to Yaounde Nsimalen Airport (NSI) and then travel overland to Bertoua, a journey of about 6-7 hours by road.
For the international leg, Air France via Paris and Brussels Airlines via Brussels are the main options to Yaounde, taking around 11-13 hours with one connection. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa also serve Yaounde. From there, hire a car or take a shared minibus on the national highway east to Bertoua.
Total cost for the international flight plus ground transport comes to around £550-700 in low season and £850-1,200+ over Christmas. The road transfer adds £10-150 depending on whether you take a shared bus or private car.
Bertoua sits on the edge of the Congo Basin rainforest. It's a gateway to the Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its gorilla and chimpanzee populations. The city itself is quiet compared to Douala or Yaounde, with a few local markets and simple accommodation options.
Price Patterns
International fares to Yaounde follow standard Cameroon pricing patterns. The dry season (November-February) is the best time to travel, as roads are in better condition.
Sweet Spot
6-8 weeks before travel for the international leg. Dry season (November-February) for easier road travel.
Avoid Booking
Heavy rainy season (August-October) when roads can be difficult. December holidays for the highest airfares.
