Bafoussam is the capital of Cameroon's West Region, sitting at around 1,400 metres altitude in the western highlands. There are no international flights here. Getting to Bafoussam from the UK means flying to Douala (DLA) or Yaounde (NSI) first, then either catching a domestic Camair-Co flight or making the 5-hour road trip from Douala.
The international leg from London connects through Brussels, Paris, or Istanbul to reach Douala. Brussels Airlines via Brussels is probably the quickest option at around 10-12 hours. From Douala, Camair-Co runs occasional domestic services to Bafoussam, though the schedules aren't always reliable. Road transport is the more dependable option.
Total cost including both the international and domestic legs comes to around £500-650 return in low season, rising to £800-1,100+ over Christmas. Factor in an extra £60-120 for the domestic flight or £15-25 for overland transport each way.
Bafoussam is known as the heart of the Bamileke highlands. The cooler climate (thanks to the altitude) is a welcome break from coastal heat. The city is famous for its traditional chieftaincies, colourful markets, and nearby crater lakes. The Marche A market is one of the largest in west Cameroon.
Price Patterns
International fares to Douala/Yaounde follow the same seasonal patterns as other Cameroon routes. December is most expensive. Domestic availability to Bafoussam is unpredictable.
Sweet Spot
6-8 weeks before travel for the international leg. Book domestic as soon as schedules are published.
Avoid Booking
December holidays (highest international fares). Rainy season (June-October) can disrupt domestic flights.
