Assab is a port city on the southern Red Sea coast of Eritrea, one of the hottest permanently inhabited places on the planet. There are no commercial flights here. The only practical route from the UK is to fly to Asmara, the capital, and then make the 700 km overland journey south through desert terrain.
Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and EgyptAir via Cairo are the main options to Asmara from London. The international flight takes around 8-12 hours with one stop. From Asmara, the road to Assab drops from 2,300 metres altitude to sea level through spectacular but harsh desert. The drive takes 12-18 hours.
International return fares to Asmara run £500-750 in low season, rising to £950-1,400+ in December. Overland transport to Assab costs extra, potentially £100-300+ for a private vehicle.
Assab was historically an important port and is home to an oil refinery. The city sits on the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. Its extreme climate (regularly above 40°C) means it's one of the least-visited cities in Africa. Be aware that Eritrea has strict travel regulations and internal movement requires government-issued permits.
Price Patterns
Assab is one of the hottest places on earth. Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. The "cooler" months are November-February. Fares to Asmara peak in December-January.
Sweet Spot
November-February for slightly cooler temperatures. Book flights 6-8 weeks ahead.
Avoid Booking
May-September when temperatures in Assab can exceed 45°C. This is genuinely dangerous heat.
