Anjouan is one of three main islands in the Comoros archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the East African coast. There are no international flights to Anjouan. The route from the UK involves flying to Moroni on Grande Comore and then taking a short domestic flight or ferry to Anjouan.
Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa and Kenya Airways via Nairobi offer the main connections to Moroni from London. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is another option. The international leg takes 12-16 hours with one stop. From Moroni, AB Aviation operates small-plane services to Anjouan's Ouani Airport, taking about 40 minutes.
Return fares for the full journey come to around £650-900 in low season, rising to £1,100-1,500+ over December-January. The inter-island flight adds about £60-120 return. The ferry is cheaper but takes 8-12 hours.
Anjouan is known as the "Pearl of the Comoros" for its lush tropical scenery. The island produces ylang-ylang, vanilla, and cloves. Mutsamudu, the main town, has a historic medina and a 16th-century citadel. The island is mountainous, with Mount Ntringui rising to 1,595 metres.
