The wait for proper in-flight Wi-Fi is nearly over for UK travellers.
Virgin Atlantic is pressing ahead with the introduction of Starlink-powered in-flight Wi-Fi, bringing forward its launch to May 2026. well ahead of its originally planned third-quarter schedule. The British long-haul carrier confirmed that its first Starlink-equipped flight will operate on route VS153 from London Heathrow to New York JFK in early May, marking a landmark moment for UK aviation
The Airbus A350 fleet will be the first to receive Starlink connectivity, with all A350s expected to be fitted by early summer. The rollout will then extend to the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, with the entire fleet expected to be fully connected by the end of 2027.
This is no minor upgrade. Virgin Atlantic currently offers Wi-Fi through older satellite systems, which passengers have long found patchy and costly. The switch to Starlink represents an entirely different class of service.
Starlink is a satellite internet service developed and operated by SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk. Unlike traditional in-flight Wi-Fi systems that rely on older geostationary satellites positioned tens of thousands of miles above Earth, Starlink uses a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband. The result is a faster, more stable connection — even over the middle of the Atlantic Ocean or other remote stretches of the globe where conventional systems struggle
Yes, and that is arguably the most significant part of this announcement for British travellers. Virgin Atlantic will offer Starlink Wi-Fi completely free of charge to all members of its Flying Club loyalty programme. Membership of the Flying Club costs nothing to join, meaning any passenger can sign up before their flight and access the service at no extra cost.
Once connected, passengers will be able to stream television programmes, watch live sport, make video calls, browse the internet, shop online, and work remotely — all across multiple devices simultaneously, including smartphones, laptops, and tablets. The service will be available from the moment passengers board, right through to landing.
The Starlink rollout sits within a wider programme of investment at Virgin Atlantic. The airline's Boeing 787-9 cabins are due for a full refurbishment by 2028, increasing Upper Class seats significantly. Ten new Airbus A330-900neos joining the fleet will also feature expanded premium cabins with additional retreat suites, further raising the bar for long-haul travel out of the UK.
For British travellers booking long-haul flights, this is genuinely welcome news. Free, reliable, streaming-quality Wi-Fi on transatlantic and long-haul routes removes one of the last remaining frustrations of modern air travel, whether flying for business or heading off on holiday.
