On of Greece’s Best-Kept Secrets Is Now Within Reach for British Holidaymakers
If you thought you had already experienced the best of Greece, there is now a compelling new reason to look again. Jet2 has officially added Thassos to its Summer 2027 programme, opening up one of the Aegean’s most unspoilt islands to British holidaymakers for the very first time. It is a notable expansion — and one that reflects a growing demand for quieter, more authentic Mediterranean destinations.
Where Is Thassos?
Located in the northern Aegean Sea, just off the mainland coast of northern Greece, Thassos feels a world away from the country’s busier island hotspots. Often referred to as the “Emerald Isle of the Aegean,” it stands out for its lush greenery — a stark contrast to the dry, rugged landscapes many travellers associate with Greece.
Expect pine forests rolling down to white-marble beaches, crystal-clear waters, and traditional villages that have retained their character. It is a destination where the pace is slower, the atmosphere more relaxed, and the experience refreshingly genuine.
Jet2 will operate flights to Thassos from three major UK airports — Manchester, Birmingham and London Stansted — across the summer season. Since the island has no commercial airport of its own, flights will arrive at Kavala International Airport on the Greek mainland, from where a short and scenic ferry crossing takes you across to Thassos. Jet2holidays includes the return ferry transfer as part of its packages, so the journey is entirely straightforward from the moment you land.
Thassos is a destination that genuinely delivers on every front. The beaches are among the finest in Greece — Golden Beach is the island's showpiece, a wide sweep of pale sand and shallow, glittering water ideal for families, whilst spots like Chrysi Amoudia and Tripiti offer a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere. The natural rock pool known as Giola, carved into the island's marble cliffs by the sea, has earned a devoted following among visitors looking for something a little out of the ordinary.
Beyond the beaches, the island has plenty to keep you occupied. Hikers will relish the trails through the pine-covered interior, including routes up to Mount Ipsarion — the island's highest peak — where the views across the northern Aegean are simply breathtaking. History enthusiasts can explore the ancient amphitheatre and temple of Athena in Thassos Town, whilst those who simply want to slow down, eat well and soak up the atmosphere will find no shortage of authentic tavernas serving fresh seafood and locally produced olive oil, honey and wine.
The addition of Thassos comes at a time when overtourism is increasingly shaping travel choices. Popular islands like Santorini and Mykonos continue to attract huge crowds, prompting many British travellers to seek out alternatives that offer a more relaxed and authentic atmosphere.
Thassos fits that shift perfectly. It remains relatively untouched by large-scale tourism, is generally more affordable, and delivers the kind of cultural richness that is becoming harder to find in more commercialised destinations.
Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2, commented: “We are delighted to be adding Thassos to our Greek portfolio. Greece is proving incredibly popular for Summer 2027, and we have no doubt this new addition will be much sought-after by customers looking for an authentic Greek holiday.”
At Crystal Travel, we see this as a standout addition to the Summer 2027 lineup. Thassos offers something increasingly rare — a Greek island that still feels undiscovered, yet is now easier than ever to reach. For British travellers looking to go beyond the usual choices, this is one destination worth considering early. From competitive fares and flexible payment options to personalised travel support, we make booking your Thassos holiday simple and stress-free.
