Japan Airlines Partners with SES to Bring Next-Generation Wi-Fi to Its Long-Haul Fleet
Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced a major upgrade to its in-flight connectivity, partnering with SES — a leading satellite solutions company based in Luxembourg — to roll out next-generation Wi-Fi across its long-haul international fleet. The move signals a significant leap forward for passengers travelling on JAL's international routes.
At the heart of the agreement is SES's multi-orbit electronically steered antenna (ESA) system, which will be installed across 41 of JAL's wide-body aircraft. This includes 20 Airbus A350-900s and 21 Boeing 787-9s, a combination of brand-new factory-fitted installations and retrofits on existing aircraft. Deliveries for the wide-body fleet are expected to begin in 2028, while JAL's Boeing 737-8 fleet will start receiving the upgraded connectivity systems from 2027.
Unlike conventional single-orbit satellite systems, SES's technology operates across both geostationary (GEO) satellites and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations simultaneously. This multi-orbit approach delivers broader global coverage, significantly reduced latency, and the ability to seamlessly switch between satellite networks mid-flight — meaning passengers experience far fewer dropouts or slowdowns, even over the most remote stretches of ocean.
For travellers, this translates to a noticeably more reliable connection for streaming, video calls, remote work, and general browsing throughout a long-haul flight.
This latest deal is not JAL's first venture into advanced satellite connectivity. SES has been a trusted technology partner of the airline since 2013, and JAL has consistently invested in its onboard digital offering over the years. Notably, the carrier was among the first airlines in the world to offer free Wi-Fi to all passengers on its domestic routes, a service it introduced in 2017. The new agreement extends that same commitment to its international long-haul operations.
The connectivity upgrade forms part of a broader modernisation effort at JAL. Earlier this year, at the Singapore Airshow 2026, the airline announced a separate agreement with Boeing to refresh the cabin interiors of 11 of its existing Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The refurbishment will align older aircraft with JAL's latest cabin design standards, ensuring a consistent onboard experience across the entire 787-9 fleet regardless of the aircraft's age or origin of delivery.
Together, these initiatives reflect JAL's clear intention to offer a uniform, premium experience to every passenger on every flight.
With nearly 90% of international travellers now expecting Wi-Fi availability on long-haul flights, JAL's investment is a direct response to changing passenger needs. Whether flying for business or leisure, passengers can expect faster and more dependable internet access on routes connecting Japan with Europe, North America, and beyond.
For Crystal Travel customers planning a trip to Japan, this is an encouraging development. JAL already enjoys a strong reputation for service and punctuality, and these upgrades only strengthen the case for choosing the airline on long-haul journeys. The rollout is set to progress through 2027 and 2028, with further updates expected as fleet deliveries are confirmed.
