London's second-busiest airport welcomes the Lufthansa Group carrier with direct flights to Cologne and Stuttgart from spring 2026
British travellers heading to Germany have a fresh reason to fly from London Gatwick this summer. Eurowings, the budget carrier owned by the Lufthansa Group, has launched two brand-new routes from the airport — connecting London directly with Cologne and Stuttgart for the first time in nearly two decades. It is a development that brings genuine value to both leisure and business passengers across the capital and the South East.
Eurowings began its Gatwick operations on 29 March 2026, with the launch of its London to Cologne Bonn service. The airline is operating 13 flights per week on this route, offering good frequency for travellers who want flexibility in their travel plans. A second route, connecting Gatwick with Stuttgart Airport, followed on 13 April 2026, running six times per week. Tickets for both destinations are currently on sale via the Eurowings website.
It is worth noting that this represents a return of sorts for the carrier at Gatwick. The airline's predecessor, Germanwings — which was later absorbed into Eurowings — had previously served the airport until 2008. After a gap of nearly 18 years, Eurowings is back, and with a meaningful schedule to boot.
Both Cologne and Stuttgart are significant destinations in their own right, offering something distinct for different types of travellers.
Cologne, set along the banks of the Rhine in western Germany, is among the country's most visited cities. It is home to one of Europe's most celebrated Gothic cathedrals, a rich museum quarter, and a vibrant food and drink culture. For those travelling on business, the city sits at the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia — one of Germany's key commercial and logistics hubs.
Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany, is equally compelling. The city is best known internationally as the home of the global automotive industry, with Mercedes-Benz and Porsche both rooted here. Beyond business, Stuttgart rewards leisure travellers with excellent museums, a thriving wine region on its doorstep, and easy access to the scenic Black Forest and Swabian Jura — making it a strong choice for a longer break or a cultural weekend away.
The arrival of Eurowings is part of a broader and impressive expansion at London Gatwick for summer 2026. The airport is set to offer passengers more than 230 routes across the season, with nine additional airlines joining its already extensive network. Alongside Eurowings, Jet2 has launched 29 new routes from Gatwick in March, Air France has introduced a twice-daily service to Paris, and SWISS has doubled its Zurich frequency to two daily flights.
Germany, in particular, is becoming a stronger focus for Gatwick this summer. Condor, another German carrier, has secured slots to operate three daily flights to Frankfurt from April — its first ever service to a London airport — further cementing the airport's growing ties with Germany.
For passengers across London and the South East, these new Eurowings routes represent a practical, affordable, and well-timed addition to the summer flying schedule. Direct access to two of Germany's most economically and culturally significant cities — without the need for a connecting flight — is a genuine convenience, whether you are planning a city break, a family holiday, or a business trip.
