Nata doesn't have scheduled commercial flights, so getting there from the UK takes some planning. You'll need to fly into a nearby city first and then travel overland. Total journey time is 18-26+ hours.
Fly into Maun (MUB) or Francistown (FRW) via Johannesburg. From Maun, drive about 300 km east (3.5 hours). From Francistown, drive around 190 km west (2.5 hours). Roads are tarmacked and in good condition.
Budget £680-870 for the air fare alone in low season, rising to £1,050-1,350+ during peak times. Add overland transport costs on top. Booking the international flight well ahead makes the biggest difference to the total price.
Nata is a small village on the northeastern edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, one of the world's largest salt flats. The Nata Bird Sanctuary attracts flamingos in the wet season (November-April). It's a stop-off rather than a destination in its own right.
Price Patterns
Safari season (June-October) commands premium pricing. Book early for this period.
Green season (January-March) fares can be 30-40% cheaper.
British Airways sales often include the Johannesburg leg.
Sweet Spot
3-6 months ahead for peak safari season. 6-8 weeks is fine for shoulder and green season.
Avoid Booking
Less than a month before travel during safari season.
UK summer holidays (July-August) when family travel pushes up the Johannesburg route.
Christmas/New Year.
