Best Places to Visit in Shiraz


Bagh-e Naranjestan: The smallest but loveliest garden in Shiraz, it was named after the orange trees that line the central courtyard. The garden encloses the Naranjestan-e Ghavam Pavilion that was owned by one of Shiraz’s wealthiest Qajar-era families. The pavilion is especially noteworthy for its ceilings painted with European-style motifs along with its Alpine churches and busty German frauleins.

Masjed-e Nasir Al Molk: Also known as the Pink Mosque, it is the most photographed piece of architecture in South Iran and was built at the end of the 19th century. The mosque is popular for its colored tiling, stained glass windows and carved pillars.The prayer hall is particularly noteworthy with its polychrome faience and dazzles the eye when sunlight rushes in. The mosque also houses a museum for the visitors.

Naranjestan-e Ghavam Pavilion: Surrounded by an exquisite garden, Bagh-e Naranjestan, this pavilion was built for Mohammad Ali Khan Qavam al-Molk between 1879 and 1886 as the buruni, a public reception area within his family home. It is connected to the family’s private quarters by an underground passage which is not open to the publc.

Bagh-e Nazar: This garden surrounds an octagonal pavilion which now houses the Pars Museum. With its stunning stalactite ceiling and lovely murals, foreign dignitaries were received in the pavilion by Karim Khan once. Highlights include Karim Khan Zand’s sword and few nice old ceramics.

Pars Museum: Located in Nazar Garden, it was founded in 1936 under Reza Shah Pahlavi. This octagonal pavilion was the place to host the royal guests during the Zand dynasty of Iran. The pavilion is also the burial place of Karim Khan Zand who was the founder of the Zand Dynasty.

Aramgah-e Shah-e Cheragh: A revered centre of pilgrimage for the Shiite, this was the place where Sayyed Mir Ahmad, brother of Imam Reza was hunted down and killed by the caliphate in AD 835. A mausoleum was built over the tomb in the 12th century but the tile work represent the modern embellishment from Qajar period. There is also a museum in the north-west corner of the courtyard with a collection of highly prized copies of old Qurans and a spectacular door decorated with silver, gold and lapis lazuli.

Aramgah-e Hafez: Visit this mausoleum if you want to know about the importance of Hafez and the place its hold in the psyche of Iran. There is a saying in Iran that every home must have a Quran and a copy of Hafez works. This 14th century Iranian hero is well-loved and every Irani loves to quote him in their everyday life and political persuasion. He died in 1389 and his tomb was placed on this site by Karim Khan in 1773.

Bazar-e Vakil: Home to numerous bazaar dating from different periods, it is the ancient trade district in the city. Bazar-e-Vakil is the most important market area from the time of Karim Khan who commissioned it as part of his plan to turn this city into a great trading centre. Today, it is home to almost 200 shops selling carpets, spices and handicrafts. Morning is the best time to explore the market area.
