Located at the western end of Algoa (aka Nelson Mandela) Bay, Port Elizabeth is also commonly called PE and is generally visited for Addo Park. However, it is also home to numerous lovely beaches and it’s definitely worth spending a couple of days here. You’ll find many bathing beaches, turf spots and water sports opportunities here. Marine life is also great in the bay with plenty of dolphins and whales that can be spotted throughout the year.

Best Time to Visit Port-Elizabeth


Port Elizabeth is ideal to visit any time of the year but the months of December, January and February are best. Summer (November to March) sees temperature in the range from 16 to 27 degrees Celsius, whereas winters (May to August) see a temperature of a minimum of 8 degree to a maximum of 23 degree Celsius. The shoulder season of spring (September and October) and autumn (April and May) experience an average temperature of 24 degrees Celsius. It is a year-round holiday destination because of mild weather conditions.

Best Places to Visit in Port-Elizabeth


Donkin Reserve: This is a pleasant hilltop park and a must-visit place in the PE. The pyramid is a memorial to wife of Sir Rufane Donkin, the first governor of the Cape Colony who also named PE after his wife, Elizabeth Donovan. A heritage trail leads you to the monuments and artworks that offer a glimpse of significant periods of the city's history.

South End Museum: The museum displays the history of South End through its multimedia exhibits relating to a vibrant multicultural district that was destroyed by during the forced removals between 1965 and 1975 under the notorious Group Areas Act. The inhabitants were then relocated to other parts of the city depending on the race.

Kings Beach: The central beach in the city popular for sunbathing and swimming. Do take care if you plan to swim here as the currents are very strong. There's also a Sunday flea market by the beach but only held in the morning hours.

SANCCOB: Learn about the endangered African penguins at this centre. Algoa Bay is home to most of the world's remaining 25,000 endangered African penguins that are threatened by currents pushing their food far out to sea. You can also watch the penguins chilling or having the feed by the pool.

Campanile: This bell tower was constructed to commemorate the landing of the 1820 British settlers. If you want to climb the 204 steps of this 53.5m structure to view the largest carillon of bells in South Africa, do it with a group or during a city tour.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum: The museum is housed in two stunning buildings at the entrance to St George’s Park and has a small gallery of paintings and sculpture by contemporary South African artists. There also some older British and Eastern Cape works, plus temporary exhibitions are also held every month.

No. 7 Castle Hill: This museum-house dates back to 1827 and is located inside a picturesque cottage displaying life during the mid-Victorian period.

Hobie Beach: It is the best beach for windsurfers, sailors and kite-surfers. Sunbathing is also the most loved activity on the beach.
