About Hobart

Hobart is the port city in the Tasmania state of Australia and the second oldest city after Sydney. There is no doubt about Hobart’s future in terms of tourism looking good. Tourism is already booming and the old town has low vacancy hotel rates. The waterfront precinct is humming with old pubs alongside new bars, a wide array of cafes, museums, fishing boats, yachts, and a floating pier with fine restaurants. The port city of Hobart has played a major role in Antarctic exploration and it is a gateway city to Antarctica.

Best Time to Visit Hobart

Hobart experiences a mild temperate climate with average temperatures near the low 20s, except during the rare heat waves in summer when it increases. The nightly temperature typically ranges around 10-12°C during summer and 4-5°C in winter so winter is the best time to visit Hobart. The city also receives snowfall only once every 15 years which is mostly caused by cold masses arriving from Antarctica. The nearby Mount Wellington is snow-capped year-round, and experiences temperatures much colder than Hobart.

Best Places to Visit in Hobart

MONA: Located 12 kilometres north of the city centre, MONA is a world-class museum of contemporary art. Spread across three underground levels, this museum was created by local philanthropist-owner David Walsh and exhibits ancient antiquities along with contemporary artworks. The displays can be provocative and disturbing but deeply engaging. When visiting the city, don't miss it.

Salamanca Place: A good example of Australian colonial architecture, Salamanca Place is a picturesque three- and four-storey sandstone warehouses. Dating back to 1830s, it used to be waterfront then and goods were hauled from the upper levels of the warehouses onto ships. Most of the warehouses fell into ruin by the mid-20th century but their restorations began in the 1970s. Today, Salamanca is home to a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. Saturday Salamanca Market is also located here.

Kunanyi/Mt Wellington: With its stunning Organ Pipes cliffs, Kunanyi/Mt Wellington hovers over the city and the view from the top stretches over much of the state's south. The slopes are laced with walking trails and mountain bikers use these tracks. Most of these mountain bikers come for the North-South Track, from the springs to Glenorchy. You can also go down the sealed summit road on a bike with Mt Wellington Descent. The Hobart Shuttle Bus Company also runs daily tours.

Battery Point: With its lanes and 19th-century cottages, the old maritime village of Battery Point is tucked in behind Salamanca Place. When you visit the city, spend an afternoon exploring the Princes Park and you will stumble across Kelly’s steps, where the gun battery stood and protected the town from nautical threats. Stroll around picturesque Arthur Circus and eat your heart out in Hampden Road's cafes. You can also visit St George’s Anglican Church where its tower was designed by a convict architect.

Cascades Female Factory Historic Site: A World Heritage Site, this is the place where Hobart’s female convicts were imprisoned and put to work. The factory held over 1200 women at a time, more convicts than Port Arthur with around 12,500 women being transported to Tasmania. You can either explore this historic site yourself or opt for a guided tour.

Cascade Brewery: Standing next to the Hobart Rivulet, it is Australia’s oldest brewery having founded in 1824 and still serving superb beers. The one-hour tour involves getting a glimpse of the history along with tastings at the end. Note that visitors under-16 years of age aren't permitted on the main brewery tour but you can take the family-friendly Beer School tour instead. Also, brewery machinery does not run on weekends.

North Hobart: See the bohemian side of Hobart at the Elizabeth Street strip in North Hobart. This area is lined with an array of cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs. Popular amongst both locals and tourists, this place will have you coming back meal after meal. There is also an excellent art-house State Cinema and live-music room offering leisure opportunities in the city. It is a Must-do on your visit to Hobart!

Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery: The museum incorporates the oldest surviving public building in Tasmania the Commissariat Store (1808). With an excellent Antarctic and Southern Ocean display, the museum features relics from Aboriginal and colonial times. It also curates an extraordinary collection of Tasmanian colonial and modern art along with some temporary exhibitions. There is also a courtyard café and gift shop for the visitors.
