About Auckland

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand and has some of the best places when it comes to dining, activities and shopping. What makes the city a truly exceptional destination is its proximity to the water. With Waitemata Harbour lining the city along with the Gulf of Hauraki and the Bay of Islands, Auckland’s waterfront bustles with its ferry traffic. One can also go to Waiheke Island, a destination popular for its beautiful landscapes and thriving winemaking culture. Devonport, located on the north shore is a charming coastal town with nice cosy cafes, parks and shops. Not only this, there is plenty to see and do in the heart of the city.

Best Time to Visit Auckland

The ideal time to visit Auckland is during the shoulder season from March to May and between September and November when the temperatures are pleasant with sunny days and low tourist crowds. December through February is the peak season which means, expect swells of visitors and high flight and room rates. However, you’ll find warmer temperatures and fewer rain showers during this time. Between June and August, the temperatures go down and so does the tourism.

Best Places to Visit in Auckland

One Tree Hill: The greatest fortress in the country, this volcanic cone offers 360-degree views from the top. It also contains the grave of John Logan Campbell who gifted the land to the city in 1901 and requested to build a memorial dedicated to the Maori people on the summit. There is also the stump of the last ‘one tree’ nearby. Remember to explore Cornwall Park with its old trees and historic Acacia Cottage.

Auckland Museum: Located inside the impressive neoclassical building capped with a copper-and-glass dome, this museum displays exhibits of Pacific Island and Māori artefacts. Its impressive dome dominates Auckland skyline and makes for a great view from the harbour. Entrance requires a fee that also includes a tour and Māori cultural performance. Highlights of the museum include a 25 m war canoe and a carved meeting house.

Goat Island Marine Reserve: Established in 1975, this 547-hectare aquatic area is the country’s first marine reserve, located only 3 km from Leigh. In less than 40 years, it has become an ecological area teeming with fishes and other sea lives, giving an impression of what the New Zealand coast must have looked like before humans arrived. Jump into the water to see a variety of fishes swimming around such as snapper, blue maomao and stripy parore.

Wallace Arts Centre: This arts centre is located inside a gorgeous 1879 mansion with the views of One Tree Hill and the Manukau Harbour. It contains an extensive private collection of contemporary New Zealand art that is changed every month. There is also a lovely Homestead Café where visitors can enjoy lunch or take a stroll among the trees in the surrounding park. The art displayed here ranges from a life-size rugby ruck to a colourful Ziggy Stardust glass painting.

Mt. Eden: It is Auckland’s highest volcanic cone (196m) and from the top, one can enjoy a view of the entire isthmus and harbours. Te Ipu Kai a Mataaho, the symmetrical crater (50m deep) is considered highly sacred by the locals but you cannot enter it. Except for the crater, you can explore the remainder of the mountain quite freely.

Auckland Art Gallery: Auckland's premier art repository showcases the best of New Zealand art. It has a stunning glass-and-wood atrium embedded onto the French-chateau frame. You will find here important works by artists such as Guido Reni, Picasso, Cézanne, Gauguin and Matisse. Highlights include the 19th-century portraits of Māori subjects by Charles Goldie and the canvasses of Colin McCahon.

Auckland Zoo: A spacious zoo, where kids will love seeing the country’s well-preserved species as well as huge foreign animals. Also called Te Wao Nui, the zoo is divided into six ecological zones: Coast, Islands, Wetlands, Night, Forest and High Country with a collection of animals known to these habitats.
