There are not many airlines that can claim eight decades of uninterrupted service, pioneering routes, and reshaping the way the world flies. Scandinavian Airlines — better known as SAS — is one of them. This year, the airline marks its 80th anniversary in style, unveiling a specially painted Airbus A330-300 that pays tribute to a legacy stretching all the way back to 1946.
It is the kind of milestone that deserves a moment of reflection, and for UK travellers, it also serves as a timely reminder of just how well-connected Scandinavia and beyond really is.
SAS first took to the skies on 17 September 1946, when it operated its inaugural intercontinental flight between Stockholm and New York — a bold and ambitious move in the post-war era that helped place Scandinavia firmly on the global map. Eight decades later, the airline serves over 25 million passengers annually, operates to 135 destinations across Europe, North America, and Asia, and employs a workforce of more than 10,000 people.
That is quite the journey.
To mark the anniversary, SAS has introduced a bespoke livery on one of its Airbus A330-300 long-haul aircraft. The design is genuinely striking — an all-over SAS blue, a first for the airline, with the Scandinavian flag reimagined as a nod to the iconic 1980s livery that many aviation enthusiasts will fondly remember. A new anniversary symbol, inspired by the shape of the aircraft's engines and fuselage, completes the look.
The aircraft itself seats 266 passengers and forms part of a long-haul fleet that also includes the modern Airbus A350 and A321LR. Its maiden flight in anniversary colours was fittingly operated between Copenhagen and New York — the very same route that put SAS on the map all those years ago.
Copenhagen serves as the primary international hub for SAS, making it one of the most accessible gateways into Scandinavia for British passengers. Whether you are after the dramatic fjords of Norway, the design-led culture of Stockholm, the fairy-tale charm of Copenhagen itself, or a long-haul connection to the United States or Asia, SAS offers a smooth and well-regarded way to get there.
The airline joined the SkyTeam alliance in September 2024, meaning passengers now benefit from an even wider network of partner airlines and seamless connections worldwide.
Celebrating 80 years does not mean standing still. SAS has made clear commitments to reducing its carbon emissions in line with international aviation climate targets, and continues to modernise its fleet to offer a more sustainable, comfortable flying experience.
