British travellers are being urged to check their bookings as KLM reduces European services ahead of the summer season.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced a significant number of flight cancellations affecting UK airports, including London, as the Dutch national carrier responds to sharply rising jet fuel costs and growing uncertainty linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The news has prompted concern among British holidaymakers and business travellers alike, arriving at a time when many are finalising plans for the May half-term break and the summer holiday period.
The cancellations, confirmed by KLM on 16th April 2026, are being driven by a steep rise in kerosene prices, which have made operating certain routes financially unviable. The airline has been clear that there is no physical shortage of jet fuel at European airports. The issue is cost, not supply. Fuel prices have risen so significantly that some services are now more expensive to operate than the revenue they generate, leaving the airline with little choice but to withdraw them.
The underlying cause is the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted oil supply through one of the world's most critical maritime shipping routes. The resulting instability in global energy markets has placed enormous pressure on airlines across Europe, which rely heavily on fuel imports from the region.
The cancellations target high-frequency European routes where KLM operates multiple daily services, including flights between London and Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. Because these routes carry several departures per day, KLM has indicated that affected passengers will be rebooked onto the next available service, with minimal disruption expected on most journeys.
However, travellers with onward connections through Amsterdam Schiphol — particularly those continuing to long-haul destinations in Asia, Africa, or Australia — should pay close attention, as even a modest schedule change could compromise tight connection windows.
In addition to the European reductions, KLM has suspended all flights to and from Dubai, Riyadh, and Dammam until at least 14 June 2026, citing the ongoing regional instability and a commitment to providing passengers with clear and reliable information well in advance.
KLM may be the first to speak so plainly about the financial pressure behind its cuts, but it is far from alone. Lufthansa has moved to shut down its regional feeder airline CityLine ahead of schedule, grounding 27 older aircraft, while easyJet has also reported a significant projected pre-tax loss for the first half of its 2026 financial year. Industry analysts have warned that further schedule reductions from other European carriers are likely if fuel costs remain at their current levels.
If you have an upcoming KLM booking — from London Heathrow or any other UK departure point — the most important step right now is to check your itinerary. Do not wait until you arrive at the airport. Log in to the airline's app or website, confirm your flight status, and if you have connecting flights, assess whether your connection time still holds.
At Crystal Travel, our team is ready to assist any affected customers. Whether you need to rebook, explore alternative carriers, or reroute your journey entirely, we are here to make sure your travel plans stay on track — whatever the disruption.
