Big Changes at Europe's Borders: What Every Traveller Needs to Know Before Visiting Europe

Travellers planning a trip to Europe this year are being urged to familiarise themselves with a significant change to the continent's border entry process. The European Union has officially launched a new digital border registration system, one that applies to all non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area, regardless of where they are travelling from.

Here's what you need to know

The EU has introduced a new digital registration system called the Entry/Exit System (EES), which registers all non-EU nationals travelling to Schengen area countries for short stays. This applies to travellers from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia, and every other non-EU nation worldwide. In simple terms, it replaces the traditional passport stamp with a secure digital record of your travel.

The system began its gradual rollout on 12 October 2025 across the external borders of 29 Schengen countries, with full mandatory implementation confirmed as of 10 April 2026.

The process is straightforward. On arrival, travellers will be asked to provide a facial scan and fingerprints at the border. Those holding a biometric ePassport can use a self-service kiosk to speed things up before proceeding to a border officer for a final check. If your passport does not contain a biometric chip, a border officer will process you manually, though this may take a little longer.

There is nothing you need to do before your trip — registration takes place on arrival and is completely free. Once your data is recorded, it is stored for 3 years, so repeat visitors will not need to re-register during that period.

It is also worth noting that children under 12 are exempt from providing fingerprints, though a facial scan is still required.

Visa-exempt travellers can still visit Schengen area countries for up to 90 days in any 180 days. What has changed is how this is monitored. The EES now digitally tracks every entry and exit in real time, making overstays far easier to detect than under the old manual stamping system. Travellers who exceed their permitted stay could face fines, deportation, or a ban from future entry. It is worth keeping a close eye on your travel dates.

With full implementation now in effect, major entry points across Europe have flagged the possibility of longer queues as border staff and passengers alike adjust to the new system. Travellers are advised to arrive at least two to three hours before departure and to allow extra time upon arrival, particularly during busy holiday periods.

Separate from the EES, travellers should also be aware of another upcoming requirement — ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. Expected to launch in the final quarter of 2026, ETIAS will require all visa-exempt non-EU nationals to obtain a digital travel authorisation before entering the Schengen Area. Think of it as Europe's equivalent of the US ESTA — a straightforward online application completed before you fly, valid for three years once approved.

ETIAS is not yet live. Be cautious of fraudulent third-party websites claiming to offer early registration. When the system does launch, applications will only be accepted through the official EU website.

Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned return date
Check that your passport is biometric — look for the small chip symbol on the cover
Keep track of your days to stay within the 90-day allowance
Allow extra time at the border during your first EES crossing
Do not register for ETIAS through any third-party website — the system has not launched yet
