Best Places to Visit in Muscat

Grand Mosque: A magnificent piece of modern Islamic architecture, Grand Mosque was a gift from Sultan Qaboos to mark his 30th year of reign in the nation. It can accommodate 20,000 worshippers, including 750 women in a private prayer hall. The mosque is an active place of worship and Friday prayers take place every week. It features the second-largest hand-loomed Iranian carpet in the world measuring 70m by 60m wide which took 600 women and four years to weave.

Mutrah Souq: Mutrah souq is another attraction of the city and must visit place if you want to get a glimpse of its past. The souq retains the vibes of a traditional Arab market even though it is housed under modern timber roofing. There are shops selling Omani and Indian artefacts along with traditional textile, handicrafts, hardware and jewellery. Bargaining is done here but discounts offered are usually small. Cards are accepted in most shops, but it is better to bring cash if you want to take advantage of the bargain deals.

Sultan’s Palace: Although the palace is closed to public, you can stand at the front gate to pose for a photograph. It was built over the site of the former British embassy where there used to be a flagpole and according to local lore in the ancient times, any slave who managed to touch the flagpole was granted freedom. Today, the palace is mainly used for ceremonial purposes.

Mutrah Corniche: Stretching along an attractive corniche of latticed buildings and mosques, Mutrah Corniche looks spectacular especially at sunset when the light casts shadows across the mountains. Go for an evening stroll to enjoy the sights of lights and fountains.

Bait Al Zubair: Located in a lovely restored house, this privately owned museum exhibits Omani heritage while displaying traditional handicrafts, stamps, furniture, and coins. It is the cultural centre of Muscat and hosts many international exhibitions of contemporary art. There is also a modern cafe and a shop selling quality souvenirs.

National Museum: Located in the heart of Old Muscat, the National Museum showcases the history and heritage of Oman. The museum puts emphasis on the quality rather than quantity by using light, space and height to display certain items of extraordinary importance. Big screens and high-tech devices puts the artefacts at focal point.

Ghalya Museum of Modern Art: Located in an old furnished house, this delightful museum exhibits things from preserved from the 1950s to mid-1970s with the centre of attraction being the memorabilia of the family that once occupied this house.

Marina Bandar Al Rowdha: It is great place to enjoy harbor activities and offers a full range of boating amenities. Marina Bandar Al Rowdha is also a popular launching point for a range of watersports such as fishing and diving. Enjoy your day by indulging in watersports and relaxing at the Blue Marlin restaurant.
