About Lagos

Lagos means lagoon in Portuguese and the city has been a Yoruba port, a British political centre and Nigeria's capital until 1991. It is still the economic and cultural powerhouse of the country because of the influx of oil money. The city has excellent art and music scene to keep you engaged during the visit. If you are visiting Nigeria, a stopover in Lagos is a must. Lagos is a divided city with two halves that are linked by three large bridges. The Island, along the Gulf of Guinea coast, is where you’ll find the wealthiest people, major corporations, expensive stores, and the historic core. The landlocked Mainland is densely populated with less wealthy people along with their tin-roof buildings. Each side has a different feel but undeniably exciting.

Best Time to Visit Lagos

Lagos experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild winters. If you’re looking for warmest time, months between June and August are great. July is the hottest month of the year with a maximum temperature of 28 C and lowest temperature of 19 C. February is the coolest month of the year with an average daily temperature of 16 C that falls to 9 C during night time.

Best Places to Visit in Lagos

Nike Art Gallery: This art gallery is run by one of Nigeria's most important artists, Nike Okundaye, exhibiting contemporary and traditional Nigerian arts. The four-storey space in itself embodies love and beauty just like its owner. If you're lucky, you may find her there who might grace you with a new Yoruba name. There is also a small cafe here.

Lekki Conservation Centre: It is run by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and has a huge expanse of wetlands set aside for wildlife viewing. Through canopy walkways, you will be able to see monkeys, crocodiles and various species of birds here. The best time to visit during the early morning. Visitors can also go to the conservation centre and library.

Kalakuta Republic Museum: Located inside the former house of the legendary musician Fela Kuti, this fascinating museum has everything intact from Fela's bedroom to his smallest belongings like clothes. If you hang around here long, you might catch a rehearsal or performance on the rooftop terrace.

African Artists' Foundation: Showcasing great works of contemporary Nigerian art, this organisation supports young African and international artists, where you can admire a huge number of artworks on your visit to the gallery.

National Museum: The museum is home to some of the most amazing artefacts even though you’ll find the presentation a bit dishevelled. The Cycle of Life exhibit explores traditional Nigerian life with displays including a clay Yoruba pot to bury an umbilical cord, Egungun masquerade costume and sequined orange cape with coins and beads attached.

Tafawa Balewa Square: Lagos' commercial heart, this square is named after Nigeria's first prime minister and has some noteworthy monuments including statues of gargantuan horses, Remembrance Arcade with memorials to World War I and World War II along with civil-war victims as well as the 26-storey Independence House that was built in the year 1963.

Eleko Beach: Located 60 km east of the city, Eleko Beach is the perfect place to enjoy some moments of peace and solitude. One can even rent a beach hut for the day and hire someone to have a barbeque. There is also a small market nearby where you’ll get interesting art on a bargain.

Cathedral Church of Christ: It is the oldest Anglican cathedral in the country that was built in the 1920s.
