Best Time to Visit Accra

Accra in Ghana is located close to the equator, which means that the temperature does not vary much throughout the year. Seasons are changed in terms of rain and wind. The best time to visit Accra is during the dry season, from October to March. However, one can also travel during the wet period and rain does not make it less pleasant. The city is a gateway to the country’s top national parks and animals are easier to spot during the dry season, with elephants seen particularly from December to March. Arid harmattan wind blows in the country from the Sahara in December.

Best Places to Visit in Accra

Jamestown: It originated around the 17th-century British James Fort and merged with Accra as the city grew. Today, Jamestown is one of the poorer neighbourhoods in the city filled with old dishevelled colonial buildings, clapboard houses and ridged iron shacks. Climb to the top of the lighthouse to enjoy a great view of the city with its vibrant fishing harbour.

Makola Market: Makola market does not have a front door or a welcoming sign but before you know it, you've been sucked into a place clogged with vendors hawking food, shoes, second-hand clothes and everything that sells. For visitors who are new to Africa, it can be an overwhelming experience, but quite fun!

ANO Centre for Cultural Research: Founded by Ghanaian art historian, writer and filmmaker Nana Oforiatta-Ayim, this arts centre took its name from the word 'grandmother' in Akan. It is a well-curated space for exhibitions, screenings as well as workshop and library. Visit this place during one of the weekly events focusing on a contemporary exhibition.

Independence Square: Independence Square is also known as Black Star Square. Dominated by an enormous McDonald's-like arch with Eternal Flame of African Liberation, lit by Kwame Nkrumah flickering, it is a vast expanse of concrete overlooked by spectator stands of Stalinesque grace. The square stands empty for most of the year, except for special memorials. Independence Arch stands across the street.

Kwame Nkrumah Park and Mausoleum: With bronze statues, fountains and roving peacocks, this park is home to the mausoleum of Ghana's first leader, Kwame Nkrumah. It is great to take a stroll and explore. The park museum is not in great shape but houses an interesting collection of Nkrumah's personal belongings such as the garment he wore while declaring Ghana's independence, copies of personal correspondence and his photos with various world leaders.

Bojo Beach: A short drive to the west of Accra city, Bojo Beach is a clean and lovely beach perfect for chilling and an evening stroll. You’ll have to pay a small entrance fee on arrival and then transferred to a pristine strip of beach with sun loungers and refreshments. It’s a great alternative to the busy and crowded Labadi Beach.

Labadi Beach: It is Accra's most popular beach where people flock to every weekend to play ball games, frolic in the water, go horse riding or enjoy loud music in the bars and restaurants lining the shore. If you're looking for a quieter experience, visit on a weekday. Labadi lies about 8 km east of the city.

Legon Botanical Gardens: Located close to the University of Ghana, this park is the perfect spot to take a break from the busy and hectic Accra. It is one of the few green spots in town and undergone a recent makeover with thrills like a canopy walkway (C20), a high rope obstacle course (C30) and additional activities including bird watching and biking.
