When to Visit in Dar Es Salaam


The best time to visit the city depends on your interest and the places you want to visit. However tourists flock to the city is from June to September which is after rainy season when the place experiences low relative humidity and mild temperature.

Places to Visit in Dar Es Salaam


Dar, as it is known popularly is filled with historical buildings many of which date back to German and British colonial times. Some of the best places to visit are Askari Monument, Zoological Gardens, Karimjee Hall, Azania Front Lutheran Church, Kivukoni Fish Market, State House and the city’s breathtaking beaches.

Eating out in Dar is a cosmopolitan affair because it is the best place to experience traditional Tanzanian food starting from grilled meat kebabs to corn on the cob. The city also has excellent variety of restaurants that includes Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, South-Asian, Ethiopian and Middle-Eastern. For high end international cuisine head straight to Kilimanjaro hotel Kempinski, the Royal Palm Movenpick or the Southern Sun.

Places to Shop in Dar Es Salaam


Dar Es Salaam has something or the other for everyone, if you love original carvings, handmade artefacts and souvenirs then visit Nyumba Sanaa. It is a shopping centre founded by the American Nuns that offers you wide variety of original handcrafted leather works, jewellery and carvings made out of soapstone and wood.

Mwenge Carvers Market just off the New Bagamoyo Road is one of the best piazzas to look for original handmade souvenirs. Again Mnazi Mmoja is a great place to shop for traditional printed cloths which are worn by women.
Kariakoo Market, the Slipway and Mlimani city shopping mall are frequented by shopaholics.


Specialties of Dar Es Salaam


Dar es Salaam is a sleepy town by day but at night the scene is different and is soon to surpass Nairobi. It has several casinos, pubs, bars and discotheques. Slipway is most popular among party goers and on Fridays it is metamorphosed into an open-air disco.

One of the happening parties of Dar happens once a month at Mediterraneo Hotel and Restaurant accompanied by foot tapping music to party till dawn. Other places to enjoy nightlife are Runway Lounge, Sweet Eazy and Q Bar.


Festivals in Dar Es Salaam


Some of the important festivals of the place are the Sauti za Busara music festival which is a six-day cultural extravaganza. Other important festivals are Dar es Salaam Annual Charity Goat Races and the European Film Festival.
