In Chinese language Xining, literally means “peace in west”. With a population of about 2.2 million, it is the capital city of Qinghai Province, most of who are Han, Hui and Tibetan. Best Time to Visit Xining


Located at a height of 2,260 meters above sea level, Xining borders the Tibetan Highland but the climate here is much better than Tibet. It has a comfortable climate with mild winter and summer. Best Places to Visit in Xining


Tibetan Culture & Medicine Museum: Located on the far northwest side of Xining, this museum focuses on Tibetan medicine, astronomy and science. Highlight include a 618m-long thangka scroll, claimed to be the world’s longest, charting most of Tibetan history. It was completed in 1997, it took 400 artists and four years to complete.

Dongguan Grand Mosque: Located in Dongguan District, this mosque is the biggest in Xining. The city is home to a large population of Muslims. The mosque was built in 1380 during the time of Ming Dynasty. Friday prayers regularly attract around 50,000 worshippers, and during Ramadan, more than 300,000 come here to pray.

Nanshan: Also known as Fenghuang Shan, this park is home to two Buddhist temples: Nanchan Si and Fachuang Si. There is a path between these temples that leads up to the hill where you can enjoy the panoramic views of the city. Visit Nanshan in the evening when the entire temple complex lit up with LED lights.

Taer Monastery: The birthplace of the Tibetan Buddhism master – Tsongkhapa, the founder of Gelug (a sect of Buddhism), Taer Monastery is one of Six Greatest Monastery of Tibetan Gelug. On your visit to the monastery, do not forget to take a closer look at the murals, barbola and butter sculptures. It is located at a distance of about 26km from Xining.

Nanchan Temple: Situated on the top of Phoenix Mountain, this Buddhist temple was built during the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127). It is the oldest Chan (Chinese Zen) Buddhist temple in Qinghai province although most of the structures one sees today date to the time of Qing (1644–1912). Offering good views of the city, it is a quiet spot perfect for enjoying peace and solitude.

Beichan Tulou Temple: Located at the foot of a barren hill on Xining’s north side, the temple can be accessed by taking the steep climb to the top as you pass cave temples which is thought to be 1700 years old. You will find a pagoda, and great views of the city at the top. The temple is still undergoing some renovations.

Xining City Wall: The remains of Xining’s Tang-dynasty city wall can still be seen within a park on Kunlun Zhonglu. Built in 1034, it is part of the south wall of ancient Qingtang city although different portions were erected, repaired over subsequent centuries. The wall is an overgrown dirt embankment and isn’t impressive but one could take a pleasant stroll in the pathways that wind through the park.

Qinghai Art Museum: Opened in late 2017, this vast art museum is spread over five floors and displays exhibitions by artists from Qinghai and around China. The third floors displays an exhibition of modern Chinese scroll paintings. Entrance is free but you will have to take ticket from the counter outside the entrance.

Airport serving London & Xining


London: London is home to six international airports which include London City Airport (LCY), London Gatwick (LGW), London Heathrow (LHR), London Luton (LTN) and London Stansted (STN) and Southend (SEN). There is only one terminal here which is equipped with 28 check-in counters, 12 security check channels and 14 boarding gates. Cabs and taxis are available to and from the airport.
