About Tobago

The sleepy island of Tobago is renowned for its natural wonders and perfect white-sand beaches, but this is not the place if you’re looking for urban sophistication. With lush rainforests, striking dive sites, aquamarine bays and nature reserves, Tobago promises a great deal of holidaying opportunities. The beaches of Tobago are known for its variety and pristine element. The beaches line almost every side of the island. You won’t find them crowded much all-round the year except in the late February when holding one of the best Carnival parties in all the Caribbean.

Best Time to Visit Tobago

The best time to visit Tobago is from January to May when there is no sign of rain and the sky stays clear. Although it is situated on the hurricane belt, afternoon rain showers are quite common from June to December. During the wet season, hotels lower their rates and if you’re looking for an affordable time to visit, this is it. The weather in the island stays pleasant year-round with low humidity and the average temperature in the low 80s Fahrenheit.

Best Places to Visit in Tobago

Corbin Local Wildlife Park: The Park was established by hunter turned conservationist Roy Corbin in Tobago's Windward coast's Hope Bay. It is home to most of the island's native animals, including manicou (opossom), tatoo (armadillo), iguana, agouti and boa constrictors. There is also a lily-covered pond that holds a wild caiman. You can opt for guided walks which are usually led by Corbin himself to get an insight into Tobago's wildlife. The park is also great for birdwatching.

Fort King George: Situated on top of a hill at the end of Fort St., this impressive fort was built by the British between 1777 and 1779. The fort also holds the Tobago Museum and worth a visit for its restored colonial-era structures and stunning views. Some of the buildings have plaques specifying its original use.

Mt Irvine Hotel Beach: Located just south of the main Mt. Irvine Beach, it is a great place for swimming in calm emerald waters and even better than the main beach. Visitors can also go for snorkelling just offshore. There is a hotel-run bar and restaurant that sells snacks and drinks. It also rents loungers and umbrellas at great prices. One can hire kayaks and other equipment from Mt. Irvine Bay Watersports.

Pirate’s Bay: Tobago’s most attractive beach, Pirate’s Bay offers excellent snorkelling and beach liming. A favourite amongst both locals and tourists, they come out here to spend the day with their coolers and games of beach football. You won’t find cafes or bars here. You need to bring your drinks and food.

Stonehaven Bay: Located northeast of Mt. Irvine, this fabulous stretch of sandy beach is also known as Grafton Bay. It offers great swimming and bodyboarding opportunities in the clear emerald waters. You can go for swimming in the calmer eastern end. There are a couple of hotels overlooking the sand, some of which have a beach bar where visitors can enjoy lunch and drinks. It is a great place for sunset watching.

Tobago Forest Reserve: Established in 1765, this reserve can be accessed within 20-minute drive east of Castara, at Bloody Bay. It is the oldest protected rainforest in the Caribbean. You pass through beautiful valleys and enjoy the views which are most scenic on the island here.

Big Bay: Castara's main bay, Big Bay has a large fishers' facility and mixes commerce with tourism. You’ll find fishermen tending to their boats and pulling fishing. Swimming on the beach is best if done away from the central section. The waters are quite calm and clear for a swim. One can rent beach chairs at the western end.

Store Bay: An excellent year-round swimming spot, Store Bay is an only five-minute walk away from the airport. It is also the main departure point for glass-bottom-boat trips to the Buccoo Reef. Visitors can also enjoy Jet Ski rides and banana boat rides. Umbrellas and sun loungers are available on rent. There is a bunch of craft huts, bars and food outlets selling local delicacies.
