Best Places to Visit in Marrakech

Djemaa El Fna: Marrakesh’s main square, this is the place where you will discover live action and drama in progress. Djemaa El Fna literally means ‘assembly of the dead’ and was the site of public executions around AD 1050. It was declared a 'Masterpiece of World Heritage' by UNESCO in 2001 for bringing urban legends and oral history to life.

Ali Ben Youssef Madrasa: This Quran learning center was once the largest in North Africa where students would come to study from every corner of the country. The inscription over the entryway reads ‘You who enter my door, May your highest hopes be exceeded’. Founded in the 14th century under the Merenids, this madrasa is a must-visit place in Marrakech.

Musée Yves Saint Laurent: The museum showcases a huge collection of haute couture clothes and accessories designed by the legendary French designer Yves Saint Laurent. The building of the museum was designed by KO Studio and resembles the woven fabric and features an auditorium, library, bookstore and terrace café.

Bahia Palace: The palace features everything one hopes for- petit and grand riad (guest house), a vast courtyard, harem, room of honour and so much more. Floor to ceiling decoration was done by Grand Vizier Si Moussa in the 1860s. Warlord Pasha Glaoui was so charmed by the palace that he decided to entertain his French guests here in 1908 and finally booted out the original host in 1911 and installed the protectorate’s resident-general in his place. Today, only a portion of the palace is open to the public.

Jardin Majorelle: French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent gifted this garden to Marrakesh. He and his partner Pierre Berge bought the blue villa and its garden to preserve the vision of its original owner, French painter Jacques Majorelle. It is open to the public. When you are here, also visit Majorelle’s art deco studio, Musee Berbere, which displays around 600 artefacts, showcasing the rich panorama of Morocco's indigenous inhabitants.

Saadian Tombs: Saadian Sultan Ahmed Al Mansour constructed this mausoleum by importing Italian Carrara marble and decorative plasterwork with pure gold. It contains tombs of princes, chancellors and their wives. All the tombs are overshadowed by his mother’ mausoleum located in the courtyard. Al Mansour died in 1603 and the Saadian tombs got neglected until aerial photography exposed them in 1917.

Musee de Marrakech: Once home to the Defence Minister of Sultan Moulay Abdelaziz, this museum exhibits a vast collection of Moroccan art forms. With its cedar archways, stained-glass windows, intricate painted door panels and colourful mosaic tilework, the structure is an impressive piece of architecture that must be visited on your trip to Marrakech.

Maison de la Photographie: Parisian Patrick Menac’h and Marrakshi Hamid Mergani opened this photography to showcase their vintage Moroccan collection consisting of 4500 photos, 2000 glass negatives and 80 documents dating from 1870 to 1950. You can also head to the rooftop café for coffee or a cup of tea.
