About Kigali

With lush hillsides, flowering trees, winding avenues and bustling streets, Kigali is arguably one of the most attractive capital cities in Africa. The country had gone through a horrific genocide in 1904 but despite that, it has focused in the nation-building efforts since that time and has seen massive changes and development over the past two decades. The capital city has also gone through a rebirth that can be seen in its cosmopolitan character. Kigali now boasts numerous new skyscrapers, international hotels and a host of excellent restaurants. Visitors are often impressed by this charismatic survivor. Kigali is also a great base from where you can organize your trips around the country.

Best Time to Visit Kigali

Kigali has an average daily temperature of about 21°C. The best time to visit Kigali is during the long dry season from June to mid-September. Rwanda's rainy season lasts from March to May when it rains persistently. It is better to come during the long dry season; when you can explore outdoor activities. Avoid coming during the rainy season if you have a choice.

Best Places to Visit in Kigali

Kigali Genocide Memorial: This memorial honours the estimated 250,000 people buried here who were butchered by the Interahamwe army in 100 days. Over an estimated one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were systematically killed in Rwanda. There is also an excellent exhibition explaining how the world watched as the 1994 genocide took place. Spend at least half day here in this intensely powerful and moving memorial.

Inema Arts Center: The centre was opened in 2012 and privately run by a collective of 10 resident artists and guests. Today, it is the leading modern art gallery in Kigali with paintings, sculptures and as well as dance and music performances. Much of the art displayed here is for sale and can be shipped internationally if you want. You can also just admire the art if you don’t want to buy. There's also a small café here.

Museum of Natural History: It is undoubtedly Kigali's best museum exhibiting Rwanda’s natural wonders. The museum is housed in the 1907 residence of explorer Richard Kandt that is believed to be the first building in Kigali. You will love the view from the garden over the urban sprawl. Only a few people know about the museum. Ask for Richard Kandt's house if you have problem finding it.

Nyanza Genocide Memorial: Located in Kicukiro, there is not much to see here except four mass graves believed to contain the remains of the 4,000 Tutsis and numerous unmarked wooden crosses. 10 Belgian soldiers were assassinated at Camp Kigali and the Belgian troops were withdrawn subsequently, leaving the Tutsis unprotected and ultimately taken to Nyanza and massacred.

Hotel des Mille Collines: This Hotel was the inspiration for the film Hotel Rwanda that was owned by the Belgian airline Sabena in 1994. At the time of the genocide, European managers of the hotel were evacuated and Paul Rusesabagina, a local employee was given the control and he used his position to hide fleeing Tutsis and moderate Hutus, saving hundreds of lives. Paul and few lucky survivors were eventually evacuated in a UN convoy. This hotel is still functioning.

Camp Kigali Memorial: This is a small memorial to 10 Belgian soldiers who were killed in this building. The 10 stone columns you find here mark the spot where there UN peacekeepers were murdered on the first day of the genocide. They were originally deployed to protect the home of moderate Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana. Each stone column here represents one of the soldiers and the horizontal cuts in the column represent the soldier’s age.

Presidential Palace Museum: This former presidential palace is located on the eastern outskirts of the city. It has limited exhibits but it’s an interesting place to explore, with secret rooms and presidential nightclub. Visitors can also see the wreckage from Juvenal Habyarimana’s presidential plane just over the garden wall where it was shot down. The culprits were never caught, but this incident triggered the genocide.
