After that, the British renamed the Island to St. Mary’s Island, constructing houses, barracks, trading post and base. City’s entrance is marked by gigantic Arch 22 gateway. Other key colonial landmarks include the National Museum offering glimpses of Gambian culture and history. Albert Market on Liberation Avenue is a must-visit to buy local produce and enjoy local cuisines. Banjul also acts as the launchpad for the Abuko Nature Reserve a protected area and home to a wide range of animals such as the colobus monkeys, Nile crocodiles and more. The park also has more than 200 bird species making it a favourite place to visit amongst the bird enthusiasts.

Tanbi Wetlands National Park’s mangroves and lagoons in the south are popular for fishing and boating. The Tanji Bird Reserve to the west on the Atlantic coast is a paradise for turtles and nesting seabirds. To the far north, spectacular beaches blanket the town of Bakau and Kololi.
